When you go on holiday do you just throw a
change of clothes in a bag and collect your tickets at the airport or are
you like me? I book months in advance and fret until the tickets are on the
mantelpiece. As for packing: I suspect small invasions take less planning!
Anoraks and sun-glasses, sweaters and swimsuits, gloves and factor 30 block.
Where are my spare specs? The list goes on.
Our Church life is often like my holiday
planning. We can’t have enough committees and working parties. Can we afford
it? Have we the people? Do we need permission and who from? Who will we let
down if a project goes off half-cock?
All well intentioned but not really Bible based.
When Paul dreamed of a man calling him over to
Macedonia we went at once and began preaching the gospel there.
When Jesus called his disciples they went
straight from their work and when he sent them off in pairs to spread the
Word he made them travel light and rely on local hospitality.
Jesus, himself, seldom knew from day to day
where he would sleep once he left Nazareth. “The Son of Man has nowhere to
lay his head.”
We mean well but play safe. Caution drives out
enthusiasm. What happened to Faith?
Sometimes we just have to seize the vision and
put our trust in the Lord.
