Do the little things…
These were
some of the last words spoken by St David the patron saint of Wales
whose life we celebrated last week.
It is
believed that David was involved in many miraculous acts including the
restoration of sight to his teacher, a blind monk, and the raising of a
youth from death.
But despite being remembered for great
things like these, his last words
included’ do the little things that you have seen me do and heard
about…’ a phrase which continues to be well-used
in Wales.
We don’t
know exactly what little things David did however when we look at the
state of the world today we can be encouraged by these words to believe
that the little things that we can do are important and can make a
difference.
For
example each household can make small adjustments to save energy to
protect the planet, each one of us can hold out the hand of friendship
to our neighbours to promote good community relationships and we can
each do small acts of kindness to those we meet day by day.
This
weekend as we come to the end of Fair Trade fortnight, we could think of
doing little things to make a difference to improve the quality of life
for farmers over seas, ensuring that they get a fair price for there
crops, by changing our shopping habits to include some fairly traded
products.
We might
think that these little things are futile, just like a drop in the ocean
but as some wise person once said ‘the ocean is made up of lots of small
drops!’
